Led by Isis Barra Costa, The Archived Body panel invites us to transcend the limitations of conventional archives, promoting a re-evaluation of established paradigms that endorse the ongoing cycle of social and environmental injustices. Emphasizing non-hegemonic hemispheric archives, we argue for the necessity of recognizing and addressing our contemporary illiteracy to illuminate marginalized histories and epistemologies. By moving beyond the confines of traditional archives, narratives, and disciplines, the panel considers textualities which, unlike Western civilizational artifacts, are experienced and maintained through forms that incorporate practices and knowledge built in dialogical relations with time and space.

Imagining the Past and Remembering the Future: Afro-Brazilian Philosophies | 5 PM - 6:30 PM
Keynote speaker: Isis Barra Costa
Venue: Auditorium at Tiradentes headquarters, 5th floor - UNESPAR/EMBAP/Campus 1 - Saldanha Marinho, 131
How have the cultures of ancient civilizations of the African continent that crossed the Atlantic been, over centuries, transforming themselves in the Americas? Which elements of the millenary archives of these civilizations are recognizable and acknowledged in the Western hemisphere? Could they ever be enshrined with the respect granted to Roman and Greek civilizations? This presentation is part of a larger project on overlooked forms of knowledge, art, history, religion, philosophy, and cosmology. It examines concepts and practices of Afro-Brazilian cultural expressions in their poetic, historical, and philosophical interpretations. “Remembering the future” is a reference and homage to Toni Morrison’s legacy and conceptualization of “re-memory” as a fictional practice of recollecting and reassembling members of families, bodies, and pasts. To build something new, to imagine a different present and future, one has to be able to re-member it, to return to the past, to learn as we retrieve—as the Akan people of Ghana teach us with Sankofa, the mythical bird with feet planted forward and head turned backward—what was left behind: revisiting the past, reenchanting the present, and shedding new light on the future.
